BMW wants the new i3 to feel like a proper BMW, even though it uses a completely new electric platform. The car combines dual-motor all-wheel drive, a long-range battery, advanced software, and a driver-focused cockpit. It is designed to carry the character of the 3 Series into BMW’s electric future.

Tesla follows a different formula. The Model 3 is clean, aerodynamic, and intentionally minimal. Its central touchscreen controls most of the vehicle, and the body avoids traditional design elements such as a large grille or heavily sculpted fenders.

The BMW is aimed at buyers who still care about steering feel, seat comfort, premium materials, and a recognizable luxury-sedan shape. Tesla appeals to drivers who prefer simple controls, software integration, fast route planning, and a familiar Supercharger experience.

The BMW New i3 uses a longer, more traditional sedan profile. The illuminated kidney grille is integrated with the front lighting, while the rear taillamps stretch into the shoulder line.

The Tesla Model 3 is smoother and more understated. Its grille-free nose, narrow headlamps, clean body sides, and rounded roofline focus heavily on aerodynamic efficiency. It looks modern, but it does not have the same visual drama as the BMW.

BMW’s published dimensions show that the i3 is approximately 40 mm longer, 15 mm wider, and 40 mm taller than the Model 3. Its wheelbase is also slightly longer, which could improve rear-seat legroom. Tesla, however, has the advantage of clearly published cargo specifications and a practical front trunk.

Interior Quality, Comfort, and In-Car Technology

The BMW i3 has the more ambitious interior. BMW’s Panoramic Vision system projects information across the lower windshield, while a large 17.9-inch central display manages navigation, media, climate, and vehicle settings. An optional 3D Head-Up Display can place key information directly in front of the driver.

BMW also combines touch controls, haptic inputs, steering-wheel commands, and natural-language voice control. The goal is to reduce screen dependence without returning to a dashboard full of old-fashioned buttons. Materials such as Veganza, leather, and M PerformTex give the cabin a more traditional premium-car atmosphere.

The Model 3 takes a simpler approach. Its current Premium specification includes a 15.4-inch front touchscreen and an 8-inch rear display. The dashboard is clean and uncluttered, but many functions are accessed through the central screen.

Here’s the straight story: the BMW feels more like a cockpit, while the Tesla feels more like a digital command center. Some drivers will appreciate the BMW’s physical structure and driving position. Others will enjoy the Model 3’s calm, minimalist layout.

Both cars offer intelligent driver-assistance systems. BMW’s available Level 2 and Level 2+ functions include motorway assistance, while Tesla offers Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla clearly states that its system requires continuous driver attention and does not make the car autonomous.

The Tesla Model 3 Premium AWD is also a dual-motor vehicle. Tesla lists a 4.2-second 0–60 mph time in the United States, while regional Tesla specifications quote 4.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. Tesla does not publish a combined horsepower or torque figure for this trim on its U.S. consumer page.

BMW’s Heart of Joy control system manages motor torque, braking, recuperation, and parts of the steering response. The car also uses a five-link rear axle and optional Adaptive M suspension. On paper, that gives the i3 a stronger technical foundation for sporty handling, although a real back-to-back road test will decide how communicative the steering and brake pedal actually feel.

Range is BMW’s biggest headline advantage. The company projects up to 440 miles under the U.S. EPA procedure, while Tesla lists 346 miles for the Model 3 Premium AWD. BMW also claims up to 400 kilometers of WLTP range added in ten minutes with suitable high-power charging equipment.

Tesla’s charging system is slower on paper, but its Supercharger network is mature and tightly integrated with the navigation system. Tesla advertises more than 80,000 Superchargers globally, along with automatic route planning and battery preconditioning. That convenience can matter just as much as peak charging power during a long trip.

Price, Ownership Experience, and Final Verdict

BMW has published European pricing for the i3, but final U.S. pricing has not been announced in the materials reviewed. Tesla’s current U.S. page lists the Model 3 Premium from $44,130 before taxes and other charges, although the exact price of the Premium AWD configuration should be confirmed before purchase.

The Tesla remains the easier choice for buyers who want a proven EV formula, a lower published entry price, quick acceleration, and excellent charging integration. The BMW is more appealing for drivers who want stronger design character, a richer cabin, longer projected range, and a more traditional luxury-sedan driving position.

The final verdict is fairly simple. Choose the BMW New i3 if you want the newest BMW electric platform and care about chassis engineering, comfort, and premium presentation. Choose the Tesla Model 3 if you value software simplicity, charging convenience, and an established ownership experience.
